These needs are: careerplacement needs, individual factors mediating international student careerneeds and barriers, and help-seeking behaviors. Implications for college counseling professionals and suggested future research directions are discussed.
Research on Mental health of college students.This resulted in a recent survey by the American College Counseling Association found that a majority of students seek help for normalpost-adolescent trouble like romantic heartbreak and identity crises. But 44percent in counseling have severe psychological disorders, up from 16 percentin 2000, and 24 percent are on psychiatric medication, up from 17 percent adecade ago.
Substance Abuse has become a major topic in research for the counselors these days. Substance abuse is one of the main issues that are faced by college counselors these days because of the extent of use on college campuses. With the new on slaught of illegal drugs that have arisen over the past years that are out to entice under age users it has become a real problem. When students see their peers smoking marijuana or using other drugs they are more likely to partake in this act. Some of the research out there are determining the best ways to approach this subject with their clients by addressing the pros/cons of substance abuse. This topic is very important in a college counseling setting because there are so many college students who are out on their own for the first time who may fall into the use of illegal drugs. Many students may fall into peer pressure and those who would normally never try an illegal substance have now become addicted to them. Substance abuse of any kind has unfortunately become a prominent problem on many college campuses.
